True North Hardwood Plywood inc. is a joint venture created in 2009 by two major Canadian forest companies, Kruger inc. and Norbord inc.
Founded in 1904, Kruger Inc. is a major producer of publication papers, tissue, lumber and other wood products, corrugated cartons from recycled fibers, and green and renewable energy. Kruger is also a leader in paper and paperboard recycling in North America. Norbord Inc. is an international producer of wood-based panels with assets of $1.5 billion. The company has 15 plant locations in the United States, Europe and Canada. Norbord is one of the world's largest producers of oriented strand board (OSB).
Kruger and Norbord are each bringing to True North Hardwood Plywood over 30 years of plywood manufacturing, product development, and sales expertise.
True North Hardwood Plywood operates a plywood overlay mill located in Cochrane, Ontario, in the heart of renewable conifer and Aspen poplar forests.
The mill, built in 1963, originally produced aspen plywood, a commodity used as sheathing in building construction. The supply of aspen poplar around Cochrane being abundant, the plant produced aspen veneer plywood for the next 30 years. Over this period the construction of larger, low cost, mills on the West Coast, the growth of the waferboard industry and the increasing pressures on forest lands gradually eroded the mill's profitability.
In 1991, decision was taken to diversify the product mix by adding higher value hardwood overlay plywood. By 1994, 75% of the plant output was hardwood overlay plywood and the remaining 25% was sanded industrial grade poplar veneer plywood.
Today, the mill produces only hardwood overlay plywood. In addition to their high quality aspen poplar veneer core, the mill has added other types of platforms to provide their customers with innovative solutions to meet their own challenges. The mill will increasingly differentiate itself through the diversity of its composite panels.
True North Hardwood Plywood inc. employs 225 employees in Cochrane.
